Reader Tab Privacy Policy

Effective November 8, 2025 — Reader Tab keeps every feed, highlight, and preference on-device. We don’t track you, sell data, or proxy your reading.

100% local · No telemetry

Single purpose

Reader Tab is a Chrome extension that keeps RSS reading local to your browser. It slides in beside any page so you can subscribe, read, highlight, and organize articles without ever sending personal data to our servers.

Data collection & storage

Everything Reader Tab knows about you is saved locally using Chrome’s storage APIs:

  • RSS feed subscriptions and URLs
  • Article cache for offline reading
  • User preferences (theme, language, refresh interval)
  • Reading history (read/unread status, highlights, saved articles)

Nothing is synced to Reader Tab servers, sold, or used for analytics.

Permissions explained

Reader Tab only requests permissions required for core RSS features:

  • storage

Saves your RSS feed subscriptions, article cache, user preferences, and reading history locally. None of this data leaves your machine.

  • alarms

Lets Reader Tab refresh feeds on the cadence you choose (default every 30 minutes) so new articles arrive without manual refreshes.

  • scripting

Injects the Reader Tab panel UI beside any page so you can browse feeds without leaving the site you’re on.

  • offscreen

Parses RSS/XML and readability extraction work in an offscreen document so it never slows down your active tab.

  • optional_host_permissions (https://*/*)

Requested only when you add a feed. It allows Reader Tab to fetch that feed directly from its host. You decide which domains are accessed.

Network activity

When you add a feed, Reader Tab fetches articles directly from that publisher. We also call Google’s favicon service to display feed icons—that request is covered by Google’s privacy policy.

Reader Tab never communicates with infrastructure we control. Every network call goes straight from your browser to the feed you subscribed to.

Remote code

Reader Tab bundles open-source libraries (like @webcomponents/webcomponentsjs) inside the extension. No remote code is executed during runtime.

Analytics & tracking

We don’t run analytics, telemetry, or crash reporting. We have no visibility into which feeds you follow, what you read, or how often you open the panel.

Data sharing & sale

Reader Tab does not:

  • Collect or transmit personal data to external servers
  • Sell user data to third parties
  • Share data with advertisers or data brokers
  • Use data for purposes unrelated to RSS reading
  • Use data for creditworthiness or lending decisions

Chrome Web Store compliance

Reader Tab follows Chrome Web Store Developer Program Policies with transparent data usage, minimal permissions, and clear disclosures.

Website security

readertab.com uses Google reCAPTCHA v3 on forms. The service is covered by Google’s Privacy Policy and Terms of Service.

Policy changes

If Chrome changes its requirements or we add new features, we’ll update this page with a new effective date. Continuing to use Reader Tab means you accept the changes.
